- Delayed sleep-wake phase disorder (DSWPD): People with this condition have a biological clock that runs significantly later than a conventional schedule. Limited evidence suggests melatonin may help people with DSWPD fall asleep sooner when taken several hours before their natural (delayed) sleep onset, not just before the desired bedtime. This kind of schedule shift requires guidance from a sleep specialist or physician.
- Children with sleep difficulties: Limited evidence suggests melatonin may improve time to fall asleep and total sleep in some children with sleep problems. Dosing and timing for children should always be determined by a pediatrician.
What the Evidence Grades Actually Mean
It is important to read melatonin research claims carefully. The NIH evidence picture, as of current review, looks like this:

- CYP1A2 inhibitors such as fluvoxamine: These can raise melatonin blood levels because melatonin is broken down by the CYP1A2 enzyme. Estrogens and quinolone antibiotics may also increase melatonin levels.

Practical Tips for Better Timing
- Dim overhead lights and reduce screen brightness 60 to 90 minutes before bed to let your body's own melatonin production begin, whether or not you take a supplement.
- Take melatonin at the same time each night to reinforce a consistent sleep schedule.
- Avoid taking melatonin in the middle of the night or close to your natural wake time, as residual levels may contribute to morning grogginess.
