How much biotin you actually need per day
Most adults need just 30 micrograms of biotin daily, but supplement labels often list doses hundreds of times higher - here is what the evidence actually says.

The short answer: most healthy adults need 30 micrograms (mcg) of biotin per day, an amount most people get from food alone. High-dose biotin supplements are widely sold, but the evidence supporting them for people who are not deficient is limited, and there is a serious safety concern about laboratory test interference that deserves your attention before you buy.
What biotin actually does in your body
Biotin is a water-soluble B vitamin, sometimes called vitamin B7. According to the NIH Office of Dietary Supplements (ODS), biotin serves as a cofactor for five carboxylase enzymes: propionyl-CoA carboxylase, pyruvate carboxylase, methylcrotonyl-CoA carboxylase, acetyl-CoA carboxylase 1, and acetyl-CoA carboxylase 2. These enzymes catalyze critical steps in the metabolism of fatty acids, glucose, and amino acids. Biotin also plays a role in histone modifications, which are chemical changes that affect how genes are expressed.
In plain terms, biotin is a behind-the-scenes workhorse in energy metabolism. It is not a cosmetic vitamin by nature, even though it is most often marketed that way.
The official daily target
The NIH ODS reports that the Adequate Intake (AI) for biotin in adults aged 19 and older is 30 mcg per day. An AI is set when there is not enough evidence to establish a full Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA). For biotin, no RDA has been established. Pregnant people are advised to aim for 30 mcg per day, while those who are breastfeeding have a higher AI of 35 mcg per day. These are population reference values. Talk with your clinician or a registered dietitian to determine what is right for your individual situation.
Do you need a supplement to reach 30 mcg?
Probably not. Biotin is found in a wide range of everyday foods, including:
- Beef liver and other organ meats
- Eggs (cooked)
- Salmon and other fish
- Pork
- Sunflower seeds
- Sweet potato
- Almonds
True biotin deficiency is uncommon in healthy people who eat a varied diet. Deficiency is more likely in people with biotinidase deficiency (a rare inherited disorder), those who consume large amounts of raw egg whites over a long period, people with certain gastrointestinal conditions, and those who are pregnant. Signs of deficiency can include hair thinning, a scaly skin rash, and neurological symptoms. The evidence that correcting a confirmed deficiency resolves these symptoms is rated strong by the NIH ODS.
What about the 5,000 mcg and 10,000 mcg supplements?
Walk into any pharmacy and you will find biotin supplements labeled at 5,000 mcg (5 mg) or 10,000 mcg (10 mg), which are 167 to 333 times the adult AI. These doses are marketed almost entirely around hair, skin, and nail benefits. It is important to understand what the research actually shows at those levels.
The NIH ODS rates the evidence that biotin supplements improve hair, skin, or nail health in people who are not deficient as limited. There are some small studies suggesting a possible benefit for brittle nails specifically, but that evidence is also rated limited. There are no large, well-controlled trials confirming that megadose biotin produces meaningful cosmetic benefits in people with normal biotin status.
Biotin supplements are not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease, and these statements have not been evaluated by the FDA.
Is high-dose biotin safe?
From a direct toxicity standpoint, biotin has a reassuring record. The NIH ODS notes that no Tolerable Upper Intake Level (UL) has been set because biotin has not been shown to be toxic in humans. Doses of 10 to 50 mg per day, and up to 200 mg per day in people with biotinidase deficiency, have not produced toxicity in reported cases.
However, there is a critical safety concern that has nothing to do with toxicity: laboratory test interference. This is the most important practical risk of high-dose biotin supplementation, and it is rated strong evidence by the NIH ODS.
The laboratory test interference problem
Many common medical tests use a technology called biotin-streptavidin immunoassay. When large amounts of supplemental biotin are circulating in your blood, they can interfere with these tests and produce results that are falsely high or falsely low. This is not a theoretical concern. It has caused real harm.
Specific documented risks include:
- Thyroid function tests: Biotin can cause results that falsely suggest Graves' disease or severe hyperthyroidism. Case reports involve patients taking 10 to 300 mg per day. Even a single 10 mg dose has been shown to interfere with thyroid tests taken within 24 hours, producing a falsely decreased thyroid stimulating hormone result that mimics thyrotoxicosis.
- Troponin and NT-proBNP: Biotin can falsely lower troponin, the blood marker used to diagnose heart attacks, and NT-proBNP, used to assess heart failure. The FDA has reported a patient death linked to a falsely low troponin result attributed to biotin interference.
- Vitamin D and other analytes: Biotin can also interfere with tests measuring 25-hydroxyvitamin D and various hormones.
If you take any supplemental biotin and need blood work, tell your doctor and the lab before your appointment. Many guidelines suggest stopping biotin supplementation for at least 72 hours before testing, though your clinician may advise a longer window depending on the dose you have been taking.
Medications that affect biotin levels
Certain anticonvulsant medications are associated with significantly lower serum biotin levels. Long-term use of carbamazepine (Tegretol, Carbatrol, Epitol, Equetro), primidone (Mysoline), phenytoin (Dilantin, Phenytek), and phenobarbital (Luminal, Solfoton) may increase biotin catabolism and inhibit intestinal absorption. If you take any of these medications, talk to your doctor or pharmacist before adding a biotin supplement. Do not combine supplements with prescription medication without first discussing it with a qualified healthcare provider.
