Copper Deficiency: Anemia, Nerve Signs, and the Excess-Zinc Connection
Copper is an essential trace mineral whose deficiency can mimic other conditions, and taking too much zinc is one of the most preventable causes.

Copper deficiency is uncommon in healthy adults who eat a varied diet, yet it can develop quietly and produce symptoms that overlap with other nutrient shortfalls. One of the most avoidable triggers is long-term use of high-dose zinc supplements, a connection that is easy to miss without knowing how the two minerals compete.
What Copper Does in the Body
According to the NIH Office of Dietary Supplements (ODS), copper serves as a cofactor for cuproenzymes involved in energy (ATP) production, iron metabolism, connective tissue formation, and neurotransmitter synthesis. The evidence rating for these core roles is strong.
Two functions deserve special attention when thinking about deficiency symptoms. First, the copper-containing enzyme ceruloplasmin is central to iron metabolism. When copper status falls, ceruloplasmin activity declines, and the body struggles to mobilize iron properly, which can contribute to anemia even when iron intake is adequate. Second, copper-containing superoxide dismutases contribute to antioxidant defense, and the evidence for this role is also rated strong by the ODS.
How Much Copper Do Adults Need?
The ODS reports the following reference values for adults:
- Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA): 900 micrograms (mcg) per day
- Tolerable Upper Intake Level (UL): 10,000 mcg (10 mg) per day
The UL represents the highest daily intake unlikely to cause harm in healthy adults. Intakes within this range are considered safe. Exceeding it chronically can cause gastrointestinal symptoms and, over time, liver damage. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency also sets a separate guideline, recommending that public drinking water contain no more than 1.3 mg of copper per liter.
Recognizing Copper Deficiency
Because copper supports iron metabolism through ceruloplasmin, one of the first signs of deficiency can be anemia that does not respond to iron supplementation alone. A clinician investigating unexplained anemia may consider copper status as part of a broader workup.
Neurological signs are also associated with copper deficiency. These can include numbness or tingling in the hands and feet, weakness, and in more severe cases, difficulty walking. These nerve-related symptoms arise because copper is needed for the enzymes involved in maintaining the myelin sheath that insulates nerve fibers.
It is important to note that the ODS reports no biomarker reliably measures copper status, and copper status is not routinely assessed in standard blood panels. This means deficiency can go undetected for some time. If you suspect a problem, speak with a clinician rather than self-diagnosing.
The Zinc Connection: A Preventable Cause
One of the most clinically significant and preventable causes of copper deficiency is prolonged use of high-dose zinc supplements. The ODS rates the evidence for this interaction as moderate.
Here is how it works. Both zinc and copper are absorbed in the small intestine, and high zinc intake stimulates production of a protein called metallothionein in intestinal cells. Metallothionein binds copper with greater affinity than zinc, trapping copper in intestinal cells and preventing it from entering the bloodstream. The result is reduced copper absorption even when dietary copper intake appears adequate.
The ODS data provide specific thresholds worth knowing:
- The adult UL for zinc is 40 mg per day from food and supplements combined, and this limit was set specifically because higher intakes adversely affect copper status.
- Moderately high zinc intakes of about 60 mg per day for up to 10 weeks have been shown to reduce erythrocyte copper-zinc superoxide dismutase activity, which is used as a copper status marker.
- Doses of 50 mg or more per day over weeks can reduce copper status and immune function.
People who take zinc supplements for extended periods, whether for immune support, skin conditions, or other reasons, should be aware that staying at or below the 40 mg daily UL is directly tied to protecting copper status. Who Is at Higher Risk?
Beyond excess zinc use, other situations can increase the risk of copper deficiency:
- Malabsorption conditions affecting the gastrointestinal tract

- Prolonged total parenteral nutrition without adequate copper supplementation
- Infants fed exclusively unfortified cow's milk formula
People with Wilson's disease, a genetic condition causing copper to accumulate to toxic levels in the liver and brain, must avoid additional copper. This is a critical exception and underscores why individual medical history matters before any supplementation is considered.
What the Research Does and Does Not Show
It is worth being transparent about the limits of current evidence. The ODS classifies evidence in two areas as insufficient:
- Whether copper concentrations or copper supplementation affect cardiovascular disease risk
- Whether copper status is associated with Alzheimer's disease risk or symptoms
Insufficient evidence means the available studies are too limited, inconsistent, or methodologically weak to draw conclusions. Claims connecting copper supplements to heart health or cognitive protection are not supported by the current body of research.
