How Much Fluoride Per Day for Children and Adults

Most people in the United States get enough fluoride through tap water and everyday foods without taking a supplement. According to the NIH Office of Dietary Supplements, typical daily intakes range from about 1.2 to 1.6 mg in young children to roughly 2.9 mg in adults, which is close to or within the recommended range for most age groups.

What Fluoride Does in the Body

The NIH Office of Dietary Supplements identifies three main physiological roles for fluoride. First, it inhibits or reverses the early initiation and progression of dental caries by slowing demineralization and reducing the activity of bacteria in dental plaque. Second, it enhances remineralization of tooth enamel. Third, it stimulates new bone formation and is stored in both bones and teeth. Daily Fluoride Targets by Age

Unlike many nutrients, fluoride does not have a Recommended Dietary Allowance. Staying well below the UL eliminates concern about either outcome for most people.

Where Fluoride Comes From

The most significant source for most Americans is fluoridated community drinking water. The U.S. Public Health Service recommends a specific concentration for community water systems to balance dental health benefits against the risk of dental fluorosis. Foods and beverages made with fluoridated tap water, including many commercially prepared foods and drinks, also contribute meaningfully to daily intake. Tea, some fish, and certain grapes are among the foods that naturally contain fluoride. Toothpaste and mouth rinses are additional sources, though they are meant to be spit out rather than swallowed.

One notable exception involves voriconazole, an antifungal drug that contains fluoride as a structural component. Long-term use of voriconazole, generally four months or more, can raise serum and plasma fluoride levels and has been associated with skeletal fluorosis or periostitis. The prescribing information for voriconazole advises discontinuation if these effects develop.
