Hair Supplements: When Biotin, Iron, and Zinc Do and Do Not Help
A plain-language look at what the evidence actually says about three popular hair-health nutrients, and the safety details most labels leave out.

If your hair is thinning or shedding more than usual, biotin, iron, and zinc are probably the first supplements you have seen recommended. Correcting a true deficiency in any of these nutrients can help, but taking more when your levels are already normal is a different matter with much weaker evidence behind it.

All intake targets and upper limits below come from the NIH Office of Dietary Supplements (ODS) and the National Academies Dietary Reference Intakes reports. Evidence grades mirror the language used by the NIH ODS: Strong, Moderate, Limited, or Insufficient. These supplements are not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease, and these statements have not been evaluated by the FDA. Talk to a clinician or pharmacist before adding any supplement to your routine, especially if you take prescription medications.
Biotin (Vitamin B7)
What it does in the body
Biotin serves as a cofactor for five carboxylase enzymes that drive critical steps in the metabolism of fatty acids, glucose, and amino acids. It also plays a role in histone modifications. The adult Adequate Intake set by the NIH ODS is 30 micrograms per day. No Recommended Dietary Allowance has been established because data are insufficient to set one, and no Tolerable Upper Intake Level has been set because biotin has not been shown to be toxic in humans at any dose tested.
What the evidence says about hair
The evidence that correcting a biotin deficiency resolves deficiency signs, including hair loss, rash, and neurological symptoms, is graded Strong by the NIH ODS. The evidence that biotin supplements improve hair, skin, or nail health in people who are not deficient is graded Limited. In other words, the research base for taking high-dose biotin when you are not deficient is thin. True biotin deficiency is uncommon in healthy adults who eat varied diets.
The safety concern most labels skip
High-dose supplemental biotin, including doses at or above the Adequate Intake, can cause clinically significant interference with common laboratory tests, and this risk is graded Strong by the NIH ODS. Many immunoassays use biotin-streptavidin technology, and extra biotin in the blood disrupts those tests. The results can be falsely high or falsely low for thyroid hormones, 25-hydroxyvitamin D, troponin (used to diagnose heart attacks), and NT-proBNP (used for heart failure). Case reports describe patients taking 10 to 300 mg per day whose results falsely indicated Graves disease or severe hyperthyroidism. The FDA reported a patient death linked to a falsely low troponin result attributed to biotin interference. Even a single 10 mg dose has interfered with thyroid function tests taken within 24 hours. If you take biotin supplements and need lab work, tell your clinician and laboratory so they can account for potential interference.
Drug interaction to know
Long-term use of certain anticonvulsants, including carbamazepine, primidone, phenytoin, and phenobarbital, is associated with significantly lower serum biotin levels, likely because these drugs increase biotin breakdown and inhibit intestinal absorption. If you take any of these medications, discuss biotin status with your prescriber before supplementing.
Iron
What it does in the body
Iron is an essential component of hemoglobin, the protein that carries oxygen from the lungs to tissues, and of myoglobin, which supplies oxygen to muscle. It also supports physical growth and neurological development. The NIH ODS adult targets are 8 mg per day for men aged 19 to 50 and 18 mg per day for women aged 19 to 50. The Tolerable Upper Intake Level for adults is 45 mg per day, based on gastrointestinal effects.
What the evidence says about hair
Iron deficiency is one of the more common nutritional causes of hair shedding, particularly in women of reproductive age. The mechanism is straightforward: inadequate iron impairs oxygen delivery to hair follicles. The evidence that iron is essential for hemoglobin formation and oxygen transport is graded Strong. However, the evidence specifically linking iron supplementation to improved hair outcomes is not separately graded as Strong by the NIH ODS, and supplementing when iron stores are already adequate is not supported by the same reasoning. A blood test measuring serum ferritin is the standard way to assess iron stores; ask your clinician whether testing makes sense for you before starting a supplement.
Safety and interactions
Adults with normal intestinal function have very little risk of iron overload from food, but supplements can accumulate. Do not exceed the 45 mg per day upper limit without clinician supervision. Iron interacts with several common medications. Taking iron at the same time as levothyroxine reduces levothyroxine absorption, and labels advise separating the two by at least 4 hours. Iron can also reduce absorption of levodopa. Proton pump inhibitors such as omeprazole and lansoprazole lower stomach acidity and may reduce nonheme iron absorption. Calcium may reduce the bioavailability of both nonheme and heme iron, so some experts suggest separating calcium and iron supplements. Consult your pharmacist if you take any of these medications.
Zinc
What it does in the body
Zinc is required for the catalytic activity of hundreds of enzymes and supports immune function, protein synthesis, DNA synthesis, wound healing, and cell division. The NIH ODS adult targets are 11 mg per day for men and 8 mg per day for women. The Tolerable Upper Intake Level for adults is 40 mg per day from food and supplements combined, based on levels that adversely affect copper status.
What the evidence says about hair
Zinc deficiency can contribute to hair loss because zinc is necessary for protein synthesis and cell division, both of which are active in hair follicles. The evidence that zinc is essential for these functions is graded Strong. Evidence specifically supporting zinc supplementation for hair growth in people without a deficiency is not established at a Strong level, and most people in the United States already consume adequate zinc from food.
Safety and interactions
Doses of 50 mg or more per day over several weeks can reduce copper status and impair immune function, so staying within the 40 mg upper limit matters unless a physician is supervising treatment. Zinc taken at the same time as quinolone or tetracycline antibiotics inhibits absorption of both; space the antibiotic at least 2 hours before or 4 to 6 hours after the zinc supplement. Zinc can also reduce absorption of penicillamine; take them at least 1 hour apart. Thiazide diuretics such as hydrochlorothiazide increase urinary zinc excretion. Supplements containing 25 mg or more of elemental iron taken simultaneously can reduce zinc absorption.
The Bottom Line
Biotin, iron, and zinc each play real roles in the biology of hair follicles, and correcting a deficiency in any of them can make a meaningful difference. The evidence for supplementing when you are not deficient is much weaker. Before buying a high-dose hair supplement, consider asking your clinician for a blood test to check your actual status. If you do supplement, stay within established upper limits, disclose biotin use to any laboratory running your blood work, and talk to a pharmacist about interactions with any medications you take.
