How to Read a Supplement Facts Label
A plain-language walkthrough of every section on a Supplement Facts panel, so you can make informed choices grounded in real evidence.

A Supplement Facts label packs a lot of information into a small space. Once you know what each section means, you can compare products more clearly and spot potential concerns before they become problems.
The Basic Structure of the Panel
Every dietary supplement sold in the United States must carry a Supplement Facts panel. The FDA requires this panel to list the serving size, the number of servings per container, and the amount of each nutrient or ingredient per serving. Think of it as a nutrition label for supplements, using a standardized format so you can compare products side by side.
Serving Size and Servings Per Container
The first two lines tell you how much counts as one serving (for example, two tablets) and how many servings are in the bottle. These numbers matter for two reasons. First, all the amounts listed below are per serving, not per tablet or capsule. If a serving is two tablets and you take only one, you are getting half the listed amounts. Second, the servings-per-container line tells you how long the bottle will last at the recommended dose, which affects cost comparisons between brands.
Percent Daily Value
The column labeled % DV shows what share of the Daily Value a single serving provides for each listed nutrient. Daily Values are reference amounts set by the FDA for nutrition labeling and are based on a 2,000-calorie diet for adults and children four years and older. A nutrient showing 100% DV means one serving delivers the full reference amount for that nutrient for the day.
It is important to understand what the Daily Value is and is not. It is a labeling benchmark, not a personal prescription. Your actual requirement depends on your age, sex, health status, and whether you are pregnant or breastfeeding. For personal dosing guidance, consult a clinician or registered dietitian.
Understanding Upper Limits
For many nutrients, the National Academies have established a Tolerable Upper Intake Level, or UL. The UL is the highest daily intake from all sources combined (food, fortified foods, and supplements) that is unlikely to cause harm in most healthy people. Amounts above the UL carry increasing risk of adverse effects.
The NIH Office of Dietary Supplements notes that one of the main safety concerns with multivitamin and multimineral supplements (MVMs) is cumulative excess. Using an MVM alongside other supplements and heavily fortified foods can push total intake of certain nutrients above their ULs without you realizing it. Checking the % DV on every product you take and adding those percentages together is a practical way to estimate your combined daily intake.
The Ingredient List Below the Panel
Nutrients with an established Daily Value appear in the main table. Ingredients without a Daily Value, such as herbal extracts or proprietary blends, are listed below the panel with their amounts per serving. For proprietary blends, only the total blend weight is required, not the amount of each individual ingredient inside the blend. This makes it harder to evaluate whether any single ingredient is present at a meaningful level.
What Multivitamin Labels Specifically Mean
Multivitamin and multimineral supplements are among the most widely used supplements in the United States. According to the NIH Office of Dietary Supplements, taking an MVM increases total intake of vitamins and minerals and can help people reach recommended amounts when diet alone falls short. This benefit is supported by strong evidence. The Food and Nutrition Board, however, does not state that supplements can fully compensate for dietary inadequacies, so an MVM is best understood as a complement to a nutritious diet rather than a replacement for one.
Certain life stages have well-documented nutrient needs that a label can help you verify. The Dietary Guidelines for Americans identifies folic acid, iron, iodine, and vitamin D as key nutrients during pregnancy. Periconceptional folic acid, commonly obtained through a prenatal MVM, is associated with a reduced risk of neural tube defects, and this is supported by strong evidence according to the NIH ODS. Prenatal MVMs have also been shown to improve birth outcomes such as low birth weight and preterm birth compared with iron and folic acid alone, though this evidence is rated as moderate.
For other commonly marketed benefits, the evidence is weaker. Research on whether MVMs reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease or all-cause mortality is rated as insufficient by the NIH ODS. Evidence that MVMs help maintain cognition in older adults or reduce overall cancer risk is rated as limited to insufficient. One specific exception is the AREDS formula, a high-dose antioxidant plus zinc combination studied for age-related macular degeneration, where evidence for slowing progression from intermediate to advanced disease is rated as moderate. Standard MVMs are not the same as the AREDS formula.
Interactions and Safety Notes
The NIH Office of Dietary Supplements states that MVMs providing nutrients at approximately recommended amounts do not ordinarily interact with medications, with one important exception. Vitamin K in an MVM can reduce the effectiveness of warfarin (Coumadin, Jantoven) and similar anticoagulants. Anyone taking a blood thinner should talk with their doctor or pharmacist before using any MVM or supplement containing vitamin K.
A second interaction worth noting involves acid-reducing medications such as proton pump inhibitors. These drugs can decrease absorption of food-bound vitamin B12, which becomes relevant if you are relying on an MVM to meet your B12 needs. If you take acid-reducing medication regularly, discuss your B12 status with a clinician.
Taking a basic MVM that provides nutrients at about recommended amounts is considered safe for healthy people. Studies of MVM users have revealed no serious adverse effects beyond minor gastrointestinal complaints, and these complaints appeared in both supplement and placebo groups in clinical trials.
As required by federal law, dietary supplements are not intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease, and these statements have not been evaluated by the FDA.
A Simple Label-Reading Checklist
- Check the serving size first, then note how many servings you actually plan to take.
- Add up the % DV for each nutrient across all supplements and fortified foods you use daily.
- Look for nutrients approaching or exceeding 100% DV and cross-reference them against their ULs using NIH ODS fact sheets.
- Review the below-panel ingredient list for proprietary blends, and note that individual amounts inside a blend may not be disclosed.
- If you take any prescription medication, bring your supplement labels to your pharmacist or doctor for a review before starting a new product.

The NIH Office of Dietary Supplements publishes free, regularly updated fact sheets for individual nutrients and for MVMs at ods.od.nih.gov. The National Academies Dietary Reference Intake tables list Estimated Average Requirements, Recommended Dietary Allowances, and Tolerable Upper Intake Levels by age and sex. These are the authoritative sources behind the numbers on any Supplement Facts label, and they are the right starting point when you want to understand what a percentage or milligram amount actually means for someone in your life stage.
