IU vs Micrograms When Buying Vitamin D
A plain-language guide to reading vitamin D labels, understanding the unit conversion, and staying within safe intake ranges based on NIH data.

Short answer: IU and micrograms are two ways to express the same amount of vitamin D on a supplement label. For most adults, the NIH Office of Dietary Supplements sets the daily target at 15 mcg, which is exactly 600 IU, so the two numbers always move together at a fixed ratio.
Why Two Units Exist
Vitamins were originally measured in International Units (IU), a biological activity standard set decades before laboratory chemistry could weigh nutrients precisely. When more accurate mass-based measurement became routine, micrograms (mcg) became the preferred scientific unit. Regulators now require or encourage mcg on labels in many countries, but IU remains common on products sold in the United States. The Conversion You Need
For vitamin D, the conversion is fixed and simple:
- 1 mcg of vitamin D equals 40 IU
- 1 IU of vitamin D equals 0.025 mcg
That relationship never changes, so you can always move between the two by multiplying or dividing by 40. A label reading 25 mcg is the same dose as 1,000 IU. A label reading 50 mcg is the same as 2,000 IU. Keeping this ratio in mind makes comparing products straightforward.
What the NIH Recommends for Adults
According to the NIH Office of Dietary Supplements, the Recommended Dietary Allowance for vitamin D in adults up to age 70 is 15 mcg (600 IU) per day. For adults aged 71 and older, the target rises slightly to 20 mcg (800 IU) per day. These figures apply to adults during pregnancy and lactation as well.
The NIH also sets a Tolerable Upper Intake Level (UL), which is the highest daily amount from all sources combined, including food, beverages, and supplements, that is considered safe for most healthy people. For everyone aged 9 and older, including pregnant and breastfeeding individuals, that UL is 100 mcg (4,000 IU) per day. Staying within this limit helps avoid hypercalcemia, a condition in which blood calcium rises to an unhealthy level. A health care provider may prescribe higher doses in specific clinical situations, but that is a medical decision, not a self-care one.
What Vitamin D Does in the Body
The NIH describes several well-established physiological roles for vitamin D:
- It promotes calcium absorption in the gut and helps maintain adequate serum calcium and phosphate concentrations, which are needed for normal bone mineralization.
- It helps prevent hypocalcemic tetany, the involuntary muscle contractions, cramps, and spasms that can occur when blood calcium falls too low.
- It supports bone growth and remodeling by osteoblasts and osteoclasts, and, together with calcium, helps protect older adults from osteoporosis.

- Strong evidence: Vitamin D promotes intestinal calcium absorption and maintains serum calcium and phosphate for normal bone mineralization. Vitamin D deficiency causes rickets in children and osteomalacia in adults.
- Moderate evidence: Vitamin D combined with calcium supplements slightly increases bone mineral density in some postmenopausal women and older men and can reduce fracture rates in institutionalized older adults.
- Limited evidence: Vitamin D supplements reduce falls or fractures in community-dwelling older adults.
- Insufficient evidence: The current body of research does not support the conclusion that vitamin D supplements prevent or treat cancer, cardiovascular disease, depression, multiple sclerosis, or type 2 diabetes, or that they aid weight loss.
Grading evidence honestly means acknowledging that strong findings in one area do not automatically extend to other health claims.
Drug Interactions to Know Before You Buy
The NIH Office of Dietary Supplements identifies several medications that can interact with vitamin D. Talk to a doctor or pharmacist before combining vitamin D supplements with any of the following:
- Orlistat (Xenical, alli): This weight-loss drug can reduce the absorption of vitamin D from food and supplements.
- Statins such as atorvastatin (Lipitor), lovastatin (Altoprev, Mevacor), and simvastatin (FloLipid, Zocor): High-dose vitamin D supplements may reduce how well these cholesterol-lowering medications work.
- Corticosteroids such as prednisone (Deltasone, Rayos, Sterapred): These can lower blood levels of vitamin D.
- Thiazide diuretics such as chlorthalidone (Hygroton), indapamide (Lozol), and hydrochlorothiazide (Microzide): When combined with vitamin D supplements, these medications can raise blood calcium to an unsafe level.

- Find the amount per serving in both mcg and IU. Reputable products list both.
- Divide the IU number by 40 to confirm it matches the mcg figure. If the math does not work out, look more carefully at the label.
- Add your supplement dose to the vitamin D you get from food and fortified beverages. The UL of 100 mcg (4,000 IU) covers all sources combined, not supplements alone.
- Check whether the product contains vitamin D2 (ergocalciferol) or vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol). Both forms count toward your daily total.
- Note the serving size. Some products list a per-capsule amount but recommend two capsules per day, which doubles the dose you actually take.
When to Consult a Clinician
Population reference values like the RDA and UL are starting points, not personal prescriptions. A blood test measuring serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D is the only way to know your individual status. If you are older, have limited sun exposure, follow a diet low in vitamin D-rich foods, have a condition affecting fat absorption, or take any of the medications listed above, speak with a clinician before choosing a supplement dose.
