The evidence for lipid effects at these doses is graded as strong by the NIH: high-dose nicotinic acid raises HDL cholesterol and lowers LDL cholesterol, triglycerides, and lipoprotein(a). However, the evidence that nicotinic acid supplementation reduces the risk of cardiovascular events is graded as insufficient by the NIH Office of Dietary Supplements.
Pharmacologic niacin doses carry real risks and should only be taken with medical approval and monitoring. Drug interactions to know
