Potassium Iodide: Predictable and Measurable
What it is
Potassium iodide is a salt compound in which iodine is chemically bonded to potassium. It is the form used in iodized salt programs worldwide and in pharmaceutical-grade thyroid-blocking tablets. When used as a dietary supplement, it is typically available in tablets or capsules with a clearly stated mcg amount on the label.
Dose consistency
Because potassium iodide is a synthesized compound, manufacturers can measure its iodine content precisely. A tablet labeled 150 mcg is expected to deliver close to that amount, which makes it straightforward to stay near the adult target without approaching the UL. This predictability is its main practical advantage over plant-based sources.
Safety notes
Potassium iodide contributes potassium as well as iodine. The NIH ODS notes that taking potassium iodide together with potassium-sparing diuretics (for example spironolactone or amiloride) or ACE inhibitors (for example lisinopril or benazepril) can increase the risk of hyperkalemia, which is elevated blood potassium. Anyone taking those medications should talk to a doctor or pharmacist before using a potassium iodide supplement.
The NIH ODS also notes that taking high doses of iodine alongside antithyroid medications such as methimazole can have an additive effect and could cause hypothyroidism. Always discuss supplement use with a clinician if you are on any thyroid-related medication.
Kelp: Natural but Variable
What it is
Kelp is a broad-leaf brown seaweed harvested from ocean waters. It is sold dried, powdered, or in capsule form and is a genuine food source of iodine. However, the iodine concentration in kelp depends on the species, the ocean region where it was harvested, the season, and how it was processed and stored.
Dose consistency
Published analyses of commercial kelp supplements have found iodine content that ranges from well below to well above the amounts stated on product labels. A single serving of some kelp products has been measured at several hundred mcg, while others in the same product category have measured in the thousands of mcg. This variability makes it genuinely difficult to know how much iodine you are consuming in any given dose, and it raises a realistic risk of exceeding the adult UL of 1,100 mcg per day without realizing it.
Safety notes
The NIH ODS states that long-term intakes above the UL increase the risk of adverse thyroid effects, including goiter, elevated TSH, hypothyroidism, and iodine-induced hyperthyroidism. Susceptible individuals, such as those with autoimmune thyroid disease, may experience these effects at intakes lower than the UL.
