Too Much Iodine and Thyroid Harm
Iodine is essential for thyroid health, but consistently taking more than the established upper limit can push the thyroid in the wrong direction.

Iodine is a mineral your thyroid cannot work without, but more is not always better. For most healthy adults the daily target set by the NIH Office of Dietary Supplements (ODS) is 150 mcg, and long-term intake above the upper limit of 1,100 mcg per day increases the risk of measurable thyroid harm.
Why the Thyroid Needs Iodine
The thyroid gland uses iodine as an essential building block to produce two hormones: thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3). According to the NIH ODS, these hormones regulate metabolic activity, protein synthesis, and enzymatic activity throughout the body. A single serving of some kelp supplements has been reported to contain several hundred micrograms, and stacking multiple iodine-containing products can push daily intake well above 1,100 mcg without the user realizing it.

Medication Interactions to Know

Potassium-Sparing Diuretics

Hyperkalemia can affect heart rhythm and is a serious concern.
ACE Inhibitors
Commonly prescribed for blood pressure and heart conditions, ACE inhibitors such as benazepril (Lotensin), lisinopril (Prinivil, Zestril), and fosinopril (Monopril) also raise potassium levels. Combining them with potassium iodide carries the same risk of hyperkalemia noted above.
What the Evidence Does and Does Not Support
It is worth being clear about what research actually shows, graded honestly in line with the NIH ODS assessments:
- Iodine supplementation during pregnancy in areas of mild-to-moderate deficiency may improve infant and child neurodevelopment, but the evidence is graded Insufficient to draw firm conclusions.
- Correcting mild iodine deficiency in children may improve cognitive function, but the evidence is graded Limited.
- Some research suggests iodine supplementation may help fibrocystic breast disease, but again the evidence is graded Limited.
- Potassium iodide reduces the risk of radiation-induced thyroid cancer during nuclear emergencies, and this evidence is graded Strong. This specific use is a public health emergency measure, not a general wellness strategy.
Grading evidence honestly matters because a Limited or Insufficient rating means the science is not settled. It does not mean a benefit has been proven, and it certainly does not justify taking doses that approach or exceed the upper limit.
