What Proprietary Blends Hide on a Label
Proprietary blends let manufacturers list ingredients without disclosing individual doses, making it nearly impossible to evaluate safety or effectiveness.

Short answer: A proprietary blend groups multiple ingredients under one total weight, so you never know how much of each ingredient you are actually getting. Without individual doses, you cannot compare a product to the amounts studied in clinical research or flag potential interactions with medications you already take.
What Is a Proprietary Blend?
When you see a supplement label that lists several ingredients followed by a single combined weight, such as "Stress Support Blend 800 mg," you are looking at a proprietary blend. The total weight is disclosed, but the amount of each individual ingredient inside that total is not. Manufacturers are legally permitted to format labels this way under current FDA regulations for dietary supplements. The stated reason is often the protection of a unique formula from competitors, but the practical result is that consumers and clinicians cannot evaluate the product the same way they would evaluate one with fully disclosed amounts.
Why Individual Doses Matter
Clinical research on any ingredient is conducted at specific doses. When a study reports a finding, that finding applies to the dose tested, not to an unknown fraction of a blend. Consider two popular adaptogen ingredients often found inside proprietary blends.
Ashwagandha
According to the NIH Office of Dietary Supplements (ODS), no adult daily target or upper tolerable limit has been established for ashwagandha. The ODS notes that ashwagandha extracts may reduce perceived stress and anxiety and may lower serum cortisol, but grades this evidence as limited. Evidence that ashwagandha acts as a classical adaptogen or improves cognitive function is graded as insufficient. The ODS also notes that ashwagandha appears well tolerated for up to about three months, but its long-term safety is not known.
From a safety standpoint, the ODS identifies several potential interactions. Ashwagandha may affect thyroid function, with small increases in T4 reported and cases of thyrotoxicosis on record, meaning it may interact with thyroid medications. Potential interactions are also noted with antidiabetes medications, antihypertensive medications, and immunosuppressants. Some experts advise against use during pregnancy. If ashwagandha is buried in a blend at an undisclosed amount, a person taking thyroid hormone medication has no way to judge whether the dose is meaningful enough to raise concern, and neither does their pharmacist.
Rhodiola Rosea
The National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health (NCCIH), part of NIH, describes rhodiola as possibly safe when taken by mouth for up to 12 weeks, with safety beyond that period not established. Reported side effects include dizziness, headache, insomnia, and either dry mouth or excessive saliva production. The NCCIH advises against use during pregnancy or breastfeeding unless a clinician approves.
On effectiveness, the NCCIH grades the evidence for every commonly promoted use of rhodiola, including improving athletic performance, reducing stress, relieving fatigue, improving mood, and improving cognition, as insufficient. The NCCIH also notes that an interaction between rhodiola and losartan, a blood pressure medication, has been reported, and advises talking with a health care provider before combining rhodiola with any prescription drug. Again, if rhodiola appears in a proprietary blend, the actual dose is unknown, and the interaction risk cannot be meaningfully assessed.
Four Things a Proprietary Blend Conceals
- The active dose. An ingredient can be present at a token amount, sometimes called "fairy dusting," that is far below any dose used in research, while the label still lists the ingredient by name.
- The filler ratio. Conversely, one inexpensive ingredient may make up the bulk of the blend weight while more costly or better-studied ingredients appear in trace amounts.
- Interaction risk. Pharmacists and physicians use dose information to screen for drug interactions. A hidden dose makes that screening incomplete.
- Comparability to research. Without knowing the dose, you cannot determine whether the product matches the amounts evaluated in the studies a manufacturer cites on its website or packaging.
How to Read a Label More Critically
You do not need to avoid every product that contains a blend, but you can ask sharper questions before purchasing.
- Look for a "Supplement Facts" panel that lists each ingredient with its own individual weight in milligrams or micrograms. This is the clearest sign that a manufacturer is being transparent.
- Search the ingredient name on the NIH ODS website or the NCCIH website to find what doses were used in published studies and what the current evidence grade is.
- Note any medications you take and cross-reference them against known interactions before adding a new supplement. The ODS and NCCIH both maintain interaction information for commonly used botanicals.
- Ask a clinician or pharmacist to review the full ingredient list, especially if you have a chronic health condition, are pregnant or breastfeeding, or take prescription medications.
The Regulatory Context
Dietary supplements are regulated differently from prescription drugs. Manufacturers are not required to prove safety or effectiveness before bringing a product to market. The FDA can act against a product after it is already on shelves if evidence of harm emerges. As required by law, supplements are not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease, and these statements have not been evaluated by the FDA. This regulatory gap makes label transparency especially important, because the pre-market review process that applies to drugs does not apply here.

A proprietary blend is not automatically a sign of a poor product, but it does remove information you need to make an informed decision. When individual ingredient doses are hidden, you cannot verify that the amounts match research, screen reliably for drug interactions, or compare products side by side. Use NIH ODS and NCCIH resources to check the evidence grade for any ingredient you are considering, and always talk to a doctor or pharmacist before combining supplements with prescription or over-the-counter medications.
