How much zinc per day and the copper depletion limit
A plain-language guide to daily zinc targets, the 40 mg upper limit, and why high doses can quietly drain your copper.

Short answer: Most healthy adults need 11 mg of zinc per day (men) or 8 mg per day (women), according to the NIH Office of Dietary Supplements. The Tolerable Upper Intake Level for adults is 40 mg per day from all sources combined, because amounts above that threshold can impair copper status.
What zinc does in the body
Zinc is an essential mineral involved in a wide range of biological processes. According to the NIH Office of Dietary Supplements, zinc is required for the catalytic activity of hundreds of enzymes, plays a role in immune function, and supports protein and DNA synthesis. It is also involved in wound healing and cell division. The evidence for these core physiological roles is rated strong by the NIH.
Zinc is not stored in large reserves in the body, so a consistent daily intake from food or a combination of food and supplements is important for maintaining adequate status.
Daily targets by life stage
The following Recommended Dietary Allowances (RDAs) come from the NIH Office of Dietary Supplements and are based on Dietary Reference Intakes established by the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine.
- Adult men (19 and older): 11 mg per day
- Adult women (19 and older): 8 mg per day
- Pregnant women: 11 mg per day
- Breastfeeding women: 12 mg per day
Most people in the United States consume adequate amounts of zinc through their regular diet. Red meat, poultry, seafood, beans, nuts, whole grains, and dairy products are common dietary sources.
The 40 mg upper limit and why it exists
The NIH Office of Dietary Supplements sets the Tolerable Upper Intake Level (UL) for adults at 40 mg per day from food and supplements combined. This figure is not a target or a recommended dose. It is the highest daily intake considered unlikely to cause harm in healthy adults.
The 40 mg UL was established specifically because intakes above this level can adversely affect copper status. Zinc and copper share absorption pathways in the small intestine. When zinc intake is consistently high, the body upregulates a protein called metallothionein, which binds copper preferentially and prevents it from entering the bloodstream. Over time, this can lead to copper depletion.
Doses of 50 mg or more per day taken over several weeks have been shown to reduce copper status and may also impair immune function. This is a meaningful concern because copper is itself essential for iron metabolism, connective tissue formation, and neurological health.
One important note from the NIH: the UL does not apply to individuals receiving zinc for medical treatment under the care of a physician. If a clinician has prescribed a therapeutic dose above 40 mg, that decision is made in a supervised clinical context and is not the same as self-supplementing at high doses.
What the research shows
Below is a summary of the current evidence for zinc supplementation in specific contexts, with honest evidence grades that mirror the NIH position.
- Common cold duration (Limited evidence): Supplemental zinc in lozenge or syrup form taken shortly after cold onset may reduce the duration, but not the severity, of common cold symptoms. The evidence is rated limited, meaning findings are not yet consistent enough to make a firm recommendation.
- Age-related macular degeneration (Moderate evidence): AREDS-type supplements containing zinc combined with copper and antioxidants have been shown to slow the progression of age-related macular degeneration in people at high risk of the advanced form. Note that these formulations pair zinc with copper precisely to offset depletion risk.
- Diarrhea in children in low-income countries (Moderate evidence): Zinc supplementation reduces the duration of acute diarrhea in children in settings where deficiency is common.
- Pneumonia in children in low-income countries (Limited evidence): Zinc supplementation may reduce the incidence and prevalence of pneumonia in children in low-income countries where deficiency is prevalent.
- Type 2 diabetes (Insufficient evidence): Current evidence is insufficient to conclude that zinc supplementation prevents or improves type 2 diabetes.
- HIV (Insufficient evidence): Current evidence is insufficient to establish that zinc supplementation meaningfully benefits people with HIV.
These statements have not been evaluated by the FDA, and zinc supplements are not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease.
Drug interactions to know about
Zinc can interact with several medications. Always talk to a doctor or pharmacist before combining zinc supplements with any prescription or over-the-counter drug.
- Quinolone and tetracycline antibiotics (for example, ciprofloxacin): Zinc can inhibit absorption of both the antibiotic and the zinc itself when taken together. The NIH recommends taking the antibiotic at least 2 hours before or 4 to 6 hours after the zinc supplement.
- Penicillamine (used for rheumatoid arthritis and Wilson disease): Zinc can reduce its absorption and action. Take zinc and penicillamine at least 1 hour apart.
- Thiazide diuretics such as chlorthalidone and hydrochlorothiazide: These medications increase urinary zinc excretion, which can lower serum zinc concentrations over time.
- Iron supplements at 25 mg or more: Taking iron and zinc at the same time can reduce zinc absorption and plasma zinc concentrations. Spacing them apart may help minimize this effect.
Practical guidance
For most adults eating a varied diet, dedicated zinc supplementation is not necessary. If you are considering a supplement, a dose at or close to the RDA (8 to 11 mg depending on sex) is a reasonable starting point and stays well below the 40 mg upper limit.
If you are looking at higher-dose formulations, particularly anything at or above 25 to 40 mg, it is worth checking whether the product also contains copper to offset potential depletion. Long-term use of zinc above the UL without medical supervision carries a real risk of secondary copper deficiency.
Because individual needs vary based on diet, health status, age, and medications, consult a clinician or registered dietitian for personal dosing guidance. Do not adjust doses of prescription medications based on supplement use without speaking to your doctor first.
