A plain-language look at what the evidence actually says about two minerals that appear in nearly every men's health supplement.

Zinc and Selenium for Men's Reproductive Health

Zinc and selenium are two minerals the body cannot make on its own, so they must come from food or supplements. Both play documented roles in male reproductive physiology, but the strength of evidence behind specific health claims varies considerably, and knowing that difference matters before you spend money on a supplement.

Zinc: Daily Targets and Basic Functions

According to the NIH Office of Dietary Supplements (ODS), the Recommended Dietary Allowance for zinc is 11 mg per day for adult men. The Tolerable Upper Intake Level (UL) for adults is 40 mg per day from food and supplements combined. That ceiling is based on the level at which zinc begins to interfere with copper status, not on a wide safety margin above typical intakes.

Zinc is required for the catalytic activity of hundreds of enzymes and supports immune function, protein and DNA synthesis, wound healing, and cell division. These are well-established physiological roles graded as strong evidence by the ODS. Because testosterone synthesis and sperm production both depend on enzymatic activity and cell division, zinc has a logical connection to male reproductive biology. However, a logical connection is not the same as proof that taking extra zinc beyond your daily requirement will improve fertility or hormone levels in men who are already replete.

Selenium: Daily Targets and Basic Functions

The ODS sets the Recommended Dietary Allowance for selenium at 55 mcg per day for adult men and women. The UL is 400 mcg per day from all sources combined, set on the basis of hair and nail brittleness and loss at higher intakes. The ODS notes that the average daily intake from food and beverages for people age 2 and older in the United States is already about 108 mcg, meaning most Americans are well above the minimum requirement without supplementing.

Selenium serves as a structural component of 25 selenoproteins, including glutathione peroxidases and thioredoxin reductases, which provide antioxidant protection and help shield cells from oxidative damage. Selenium is also required for normal thyroid hormone metabolism, including the conversion of the prohormone T4 to the active form T3. Both of these roles are graded as strong evidence. Separately, the ODS notes that selenium supports DNA synthesis and normal reproduction, also graded as strong evidence, which is the physiological basis for its inclusion in men's health formulas.

What the Research Actually Shows for Male Fertility

It is important to separate physiological necessity from supplementation benefit. The body needs selenium for normal reproduction. That does not automatically mean that adding a selenium supplement on top of an adequate diet will improve sperm quality or fertility outcomes in healthy men.

When the ODS evaluated the direct question of whether selenium supplementation improves male fertility or sperm quality, it graded the evidence as insufficient. Clinical trials in this area have been small, methodologically inconsistent, or have produced conflicting results. The same honest grading applies to several other widely marketed claims for selenium, including cancer prevention, cardiovascular disease, and cognitive health, all rated insufficient by the ODS.

For zinc, the ODS has not issued a specific evidence grade for male fertility as a standalone outcome in its current fact sheets. The strong evidence for zinc covers its foundational enzymatic and cellular roles. Claims that go beyond those roles, such as boosting testosterone in replete men, are not supported by the same quality of evidence.

Safety Considerations

Zinc Safety

Most people in the United States consume adequate amounts of zinc from food alone. Doses of 50 mg or more per day over several weeks can reduce copper status and impair immune function, which is the opposite of the intended effect. The ODS is clear that the 40 mg UL applies to food and supplements combined. The UL does not apply to individuals receiving zinc for medical treatment under the direct care of a physician.

Selenium Safety

Because average dietary intake in the United States already sits around 108 mcg per day, adding a high-dose selenium supplement can push total intake closer to the 400 mcg UL than many people realize. Staying below the UL is advised unless selenium is taken under a physician's supervision. Early signs of excess selenium, sometimes called selenosis, include hair and nail changes.

Drug Interactions You Should Know

Zinc Interactions

  • Quinolone antibiotics such as ciprofloxacin and tetracycline antibiotics can interact with zinc in the gastrointestinal tract, reducing absorption of both the zinc and the antibiotic. The ODS recommends taking the antibiotic at least 2 hours before or 4 to 6 hours after a zinc supplement.
  • Penicillamine, used for rheumatoid arthritis and Wilson disease, can have its absorption and action reduced by zinc. The ODS advises taking zinc and penicillamine at least 1 hour apart.
  • Thiazide diuretics such as chlorthalidone and hydrochlorothiazide increase urinary zinc excretion, which can decrease serum zinc concentrations over time.
  • Supplements containing 25 mg or more of elemental iron taken at the same time as zinc can reduce zinc absorption and plasma zinc concentrations.

Selenium Interactions

  • Cisplatin, a platinum-based chemotherapy agent, can reduce selenium levels in hair and serum. A Cochrane Review found insufficient evidence that selenium supplementation alleviates chemotherapy side effects, and the clinical significance of these reductions is not yet established.
  • Selenium supplements may interact with other medications, and certain medications can affect body selenium levels. Anyone taking medications regularly should discuss their selenium status with a health care provider before supplementing.

Practical Takeaways

Zinc and selenium are essential minerals with well-documented roles in the enzymatic and cellular processes that underlie male reproductive biology. That foundation is grounded in strong evidence from the ODS. What is far less certain is whether supplementing above your dietary intake produces measurable reproductive benefits if you are not deficient. The ODS grades selenium supplementation for male fertility as insufficient evidence, and no strong trial data currently overturns that assessment.

If you eat a varied diet and live in a region with selenium-adequate soil, you may already be meeting or exceeding the selenium RDA without any supplement. For zinc, the 11 mg daily target is achievable through meat, shellfish, legumes, and fortified foods for most men.
