Ginger: Benefits, Dosage, and Safety

What ginger is

Ginger is the rhizome (underground stem) of Zingiber officinale, a tropical plant native to warm parts of Asia and now grown in South America, Africa, and the Middle East. It is used both as a food spice and as an herbal dietary supplement. It is not an essential nutrient, so no dietary requirement exists. Its characteristic pungency comes from compounds called gingerols and shogaols.

Common forms include fresh or dried root, capsules and tablets, powdered extract, liquid extracts (tinctures), and teas. Most clinical studies used dietary supplements rather than food. Products vary widely in gingerol content and standardization, so potency is not consistent across brands.

Safety, excess and interactions

Ginger has been used safely in many research studies when taken orally as a dietary supplement, and topical products may also be safe. Side effects can include abdominal discomfort, heartburn, diarrhea, and mouth or throat irritation. Use during pregnancy may be safe, but anyone considering ginger while pregnant should consult a health care provider; little is known about safety while breastfeeding. Anyone taking medication should talk with a health care provider before use, because some herbs and medicines interact in harmful ways.

Too much

Ginger has been used safely in many oral research studies. Reported side effects, most often with powdered ginger, include abdominal discomfort, heartburn, diarrhea, and mouth and throat irritation. Higher intakes may increase gastrointestinal upset. No Tolerable Upper Intake Level has been set because ginger is not a nutrient with an established DRI.

Interactions to know

  • Anticoagulant and antiplatelet drugs (for example warfarin): ginger may theoretically increase bleeding risk and is often cautioned against in people with bleeding disorders
  • Antihypertensive drugs: ginger may lower blood pressure, so combined use warrants caution
  • Oral hypoglycemic agents and other diabetes medicines: ginger may increase the risk of low blood sugar
  • General: some herbs and medicines interact in harmful ways, so consult a health care provider before combining ginger with any medication

How status is measured

Not routinely measured. There is no established blood test or biomarker for ginger intake or status, since ginger is not an essential nutrient.

Ginger as a food is generally recognized as safe (GRAS) by the U.S. FDA. As a dietary supplement it is not reviewed or approved by the FDA before sale; manufacturers are responsible for safety and labeling. Herbal dietary supplements are regulated less strictly than drugs.
